1. Types of Rail Pass in Japan
|
|
Japan Rail Pass – With Japan Rail Pass you can board almost any train on Japan Railways Group (JR Group) lines throughout the country. For modern convenient sight-seeing, Japan Rail Pass is a traveler’s best friend.

a. Railways All JR Group Railways-Shinkansen “bullet trains” (except any reserved or non-reserved seat on “NOZOMI” trains), limited express trains, express trains, and rapid or local trains. (With some exceptions)
|
b. Buses Local lines of JR bus companies (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Shikoku Bus, JR Kyushu Bus) and some of JR highway bus services*. * Sapporo-Otaru; Morioka-Hirosaki; Tokyo-Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka,Tsukuba Center; Nagoya-Kyoto, Osaka; Osaka-Tsuyama, Kasai Flower Center

c. Ferry Only the JR Miyajima ferry is covered. The JR Hakata-Pusan (Korea) ferry is not covered.

JR East Pass – Valid for travel on all of the 72 railway lines of JR EAST: limited express trains (except private compartments or berths), including Shinkansen super express trains; express trains (except berths, etc.) ; local trains (except “Liner”/”Home Liner”).

JR West Pass (Sanyo Area)
With this Pass you could travel to Osaka, Okayama, Hiroshima, Hakata and other sightseeing places in the sanyo area via Haruka, Shinkansen, and standard trains within the corresponding area.

JR West Pass (Kansai Area)
With this pass, you could travel to Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara, Himeji and other sightseeing places in the Kansai area via any standard trains and Haruka non-reserved seats within the corresponding area.

Kyushu Rail Pass
This pass is valid for ordinary cars, reserved and open seating on the Kyushu Railway Company Ltd. express trains and open seating on local trains (including local express trains). You could visit the famous Beppu’s hot spring resorts, Active Volcanos Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture and Sakurajima in Kagoshima and taste the original chicken Shabu-shabu in the traditional yatai (mobile food stall) of Fukuoka.

Hokkaido Rail Pass
Valid for all the train lines of Hokkaido Railway Co. and the bus lines of JR Hokkaido Bus
(excluding Sapporo – Asahikawa / Sapporo – Mombetsu / Sapporo – Obihiro / Sapporo – Kiroro / Sapporo – Erimo & Hiroo lines and irregular lines). You could enjoy visiting the Furano Flowers, Sahoro Ski resort area and also the Noboribetsu hot spring resorts!

2. Who is eligible for the Rail Pass in Japan?
|
a. You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing, under the entry status of “temporary visitor.” “Temporary Visitor” entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for “sight-seeing, etc.” If you apply for a “stay for sight-seeing” when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as “Temporary Visitor,” as shown below. Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a JAPAN RAIL PASS.
b. You are a Japanese national living in a foreign country, -who is qualified to live permanently in that country, or -who is married to a non-Japanese residing in a country other than Japan.

3. Validity period
|
The validity period of a JAPAN RAIL PASS is the consecutive number of days of the validity period of the PASS beginning on the date the PASS is first used.
It must be noted that t he pass is by date, not by time of day, so if you start using it in the evening, that will still count as a full day.
Within three months from the date the Exchange Order was issued, you must turn in your Exchange Order to obtain your JAPAN RAIL PASS. At that time, you have to specify the date that you want to start using the PASS. It can be any date within one month from the date the PASS is received.
Once the PASS has a starting date written on it, the date cannot be changed.
